In 1868 Sylvester G. & Silas W. Mason were listed as machinists on Water Street, Corner of River Street in Rochester. In 1869 the business was listed as Mason & Pierce. This company was listed in the 1870 Boyd's Business Directory of New York State under Rochester: "Wood Working Machinery &c. N. Water cor. River". Its principals were Sylvester G. Mason and Joseph D. Pierce. By 1873, the business was no longer listed in the Rochester City Directory and S. G, Mason had taken a job as Superintendent of Carver Pump Co. on North Water Street in Rochester. J. D. Pierce was no longer listed as living in Rochester. The business was apparently sold or turned over to Beisheim & Turnbull at 111½ North Water Street in Rochester.
