The jointer was originally purchased at a bankruptcy auction in the Port Richmond section of Philly 8 or 9 years ago. In retrospect, it probably amounted to buying something I didn’t really need. My 8” Delta has taken care of just about all my jointing needs. The L Power was always one of those projects I never seemed to get around to quite finishing.
This is an original ball bearing machine with the original 3 knife round gibbed cutterhead. L Power was arguably one of the first manufacturers to offer buyers a choice of bearing material. As I found out later, many of the L Power machines were fitted with 2 phase motors. A few sections of the city—Port Richmond among them—still have 2 phase grandfathered in and it’s still possible to run them down there today. Most anywhere else the only options are to either change the motor or rewind it for three phase current. I went the latter route and had the oil bath precision bearings in the cutterhead replaced while the 3 HP Woods motor was apart. The work was done by a shop in Easton PA and the bill was over $1200. They did an excellent job and the machine is absurdly quiet. Has to be a good 30 decibels or more lower than the 8” Delta. The cutterhead freewheels 50 seconds following shutdown.
All in all the jointer is very clean for its age. Nothing is broken or welded. There are a few spots of light rust/discoloration on the “working” areas of the tables (almost certainly never resurfaced) and a heavier coat under the fence base. The leading edge of the steel table insert next to the cutterhead is slightly deformed over about an inch of its length. Ideally this should be pressed flat and stoned but pretty minor and doesn’t interfere with the cutterhead in any way. The tables also need to be aligned. In preparation for that, I installed and set three freshly sharpened spare knives that came with the machine. After replacing all the gib screws and knife lifters and spending about three hours with the dial indicator, I discovered that the knives were dish shaped. Sent the original set to to a local shop I've used before and didn’t get back around to install them. They come with the machine.
Also included for my $1500 asking price are a Northfield guard (needs a return spring) and a custom “super duty” HTC base. Not including one or both of these will drop the price. Don’t want to give it away (have about $2500 invested) but we’re going to be moving and I know I need to be realistic. |
