Restored 3/20/26, Unused, Like New
Rare Estate Find Fully Disassembled, Stripped and Restored 220V 2hp Baldor Motor w/ Internal Power Brake 4200 RPM Cutterhead Speed 14 ft./min. Feed Rate 750 lbs. Cast Iron
Worth noting is almost all of the original parts and hardware were in good to excellent condition and few parts needed to be sourced. After disassembly all parts were given a degreaser soak and wire brushing. A second rust removing soak was used on all raw steel parts and hardware. Final rust removal and surface prep was followed by machine and/or hand polish, wax and shine to all of the unpainted steel surfaces. Painted surfaces were given 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of color. The color is Farm & Implement Massey Ferguson Gray.
Some of the major expenses in the restoration included replacing the bronze intermediate worm gear, resurfacing the table bed, new mobile base with foot operated caster locks, paint and primer, new bearings throughout, new knives, assorted hardware - as well as consumables like degreaser, rust removers, and abrasives.
The 5” wheels on the base provide a smooth ride on uneven surfaces with little effort to move around. The table has been set parallel to the cutterhead and the new knives have been installed to spec. The restored clutch engagement is smooth and firm. The infeed, outfeed and table rollers have been reset to factory specs. It runs like a champ.
This one is good to go for another 70 years as a daily user or a showpiece for the wood shop that has it all.
*Special thanks to everyone on the OWWM discussion forum for posting their experiences with similar projects, especially Dan Swartz for his in depth journal. |
