Information on this scrollsaw maker is exceedingly sketchy. They were in business from 1870 through 1874, and perhaps for longer. One of the principals was John Du Bois. There is confusion over the identify of Mr. Beugler; there is evidence for both James M. Beugler and Edwin F. Beugler, who were probably brothers.

Information Sources

  • Listed in the 1870 reference, Plotts' Williamsport City Directory 1870-1871: "DuBois & Beugler (John DuBois and J. M. Beugler. Manufacturers of patent scroll sawing machines. 83 W. 3rd street." There is supposed to be an ad for them in the book, but it was apparently lost when the volume was rebound.
  • The above-mentioned "patent scroll sawing machines" is a minor mystery. James M. Beugler's scrollsaw patent was granted in 1875, so it cannot be the patent in question. We do not know what patent they were using as we have never seen a DuBois & Beugler scrollsaw, nor have we seen so much as a patent date.
  • Listed in the 1874 work, Wiley's American iron trade manual of the leading iron industries of the United States. "DUBOIS & BENGLER [sic]—Scroll-saws."
