I bought this saw at the equipment liquidation auction of the Rocks Estate in Bethlehem, NH, back in 2007. The Rocks was the Summer home of John Jacob Glessner, a co-founder of International Harvester Corporation. The estate had a workshop building that was totally outfit to build almost anything one could want made out of metal or wood. The wood working shop was on the second floor of the building, and had all the latest tools circa 1900: 20" Crescent planer, 12" Crescent jointer, 32" Crescent band saw, step mortiser, wood turning lathe (about 8' between centers), table saw, and probably some others I can't remember (I wish I had some pictures of the shop before the auction!). All the equipment was powered by individual 3ph delta open frame motors with flat belt pulleys. The electricity came from a small hydro facility at the outlet of a nearby pond. The third floor was wood inventory storage, and the first floor had a large area for working on vehicles in one section, and a blacksmith shop in the other section. I was able to get a few of these tools. (I wish I had been able to get a few more items, but I had quite a load as it was). The Estate was given to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests in 1978, and has been a Christmas tree farm ever since. |
