Source=Owner's submission. Owner's notes: I purchased this machine about six years ago at an auction in Central, Iowa. According to the book I received with the lathe the former owner was from Fort Collins, Colorado, and the owner before him was from Berthoud, CO. It’s a good all-around machine for non-precision work (until I have the opportunity to adjust it and calibrate it). I’ve heard a lot of negative comments about Atlas that appear to be somewhat unwarranted. I know it’s not the cream of the crop but for the average shop, I feel that it’s adequate. I have made many things on it already that have been very usable. No serious flaws or problems in the machine itself. The previous owner had it mounted on a table that needed some work, however, I have managed to improve the mounting of the motor and the alignment of the drive belts. They were about 3/4 of an inch off-center. A good cross-section of tools came with the lathe, a book on how to run a Lathe and 2 Atlas (operations and machinists tables) books. Also; the pages of one of those books have been copied and enlarged and placed in a ring notebook that have been very valuable. There were two chucks, one three jaw, and one four jaw. it was necessary to replace a the drive screw gearbox.(my fault)
There are also several documents relating to accessories and parts list one is from Clausing Industrial Inc. Service Center in Goshen, Indiana. In the ring notebook, there are also three slide rule style calculators for threading, bandsaw, selector, and end mill speed feed calculator. And information sheet for grinding your own lathe tools. And I was pleased to find inside the gear cover on the left hand side of the machine, a threading chart riveted to the inside of the cover. I also have a set of threading gears, boring bars, two sets of jaws for the three jaw chuck. A steady rest, face plate, milling attachment, end, mills, and other parts, etc… I do have one part that I would be interested to determine what it is. I will make pictures available.
I’m pleased to be able to post this and look forward to gathering information about my machine. Thank you. William Darrow. |
