Serial Number: 34-4411
Machine Type: Band Saw
Machine Description: 14” wood cutting band saw
Owner: Adam A. Yates
Manufacture Date: 1945
Notes: Source=Owner's submission (admin added date based on s/n). Owner's notes: I bought this band saw in November 2020 off of Craigslist. It ran and was usable when I bought it, but I did rewire it right away. The seller provided a photocopy of the manual, which is P. M. No. 1517, date 8-1-43. The serial number tag is there, but the model number tag is missing. From looking at the 1943 catalog, it is probably a model 28-207. I can tell it originally belonged to a business of some kind, because the front page of the manual has “Asset # 821” written on it. A subsequent owner blacked out the writing with a wide marker, but you can still read it. The motor is a Master Electric repulsion-induction 3/4 HP. I was told it originally had a 3-phase motor when it was being used commercially, but the previous owner installed the single phase motor to use it at home. The saw has four coats of paint on it; the original gray, olive green, neon green (yuck!), and flat black. I plan to strip and repaint it gray. The adjustments for the blade guides were painted over, so I had to take them all apart and clean the paint off. The saw has an original Delta steel stand, which has been welded to a plate so casters could be installed. I will probably leave it like that. The saw has spoked cast iron wheels. The lead balance weight is missing from the lower wheel, which caused the saw to vibrate badly. I obtained some clip-on weights for balancing car wheels, and added one weight at a time until the vibration was gone. The rubber tires were cracked, so I replaced them. I chose black polyurethane tires, rather than blue or orange, so they would look like the original rubber tires. I replaced the thrust bearings, and installed Olson Cool Blocks. I replaced the belt and pulleys, and installed a spring-loaded idler to automatically tension the belt. The band saw works great and I am looking forward to many years of use out of it.
