I have a band saw that came from my great grandfather's furniture shop in Austin, Texas. He bought it in the early 1900's, but I don't know the exact year or whether it was new or used. My great uncle took over the business upon his death and operated the furniture business until the early 70's. He passed it along to my uncle, who gave it to me.
The saw is a 20" saw made by Crescent Machine Co., Leetonia, OH. The serial number, "No. 52951" is stamped into a raised flat plate cast on the upper arm on the side away from the pulley. The saw was originally driven by a belt (leather, I think) which also drove some other devices in the shop. It was later converted to use an electric motor by adding a v-belt pulley, but the control arm that engaged the leather belt is still in place. The pulleys themselves are missing. It was not equipped with treadles for foot power. I put tires and a blade on it and used if a few times, but the 1275 RPM motor did not have sufficient ratios to drive the wheels slowly enough. I never got around to pouring a new insert for the table and never got the hang of adjusting the blade guide. |
