This is a very early version of the Crescent/Delta/Rockwell 20" band saw. Its a model 28-351 and not the more common 28-350. What makes this a model 28-351 is that its a direct drive saw and has a 1 HP, 850 RPM, 3 phase motor. There was also a single phase direct drive model available, 28-352. This saw also has cast iron wheels which are fitted with regular rubber tires and not the aluminum wheels that were used in later production which require the special tires. The saw is in good complete condition with the only problem known at this time to be bad bearings on the upper wheel spindle. I bought this saw for $100 at a poorly attended auction of a going out of business woodworker/cabinetmaker. I plan to power this saw with a VFD, replace the upper wheel bearings and use it as is for the present time. I believe this saw dates from no later than 1947 because is uses the early style serial number tag which was last used in 1947. This is also the earliest example of this saw that I've been able to find in looking at the photo index entries under Crescent, Delta and Rockwell.
