I got the machine at a school auction. The motor would not run. When I got it home and took it apart the stator windings were bad and had to be replaced. The ball bearings were worn. This is the only motor that I have seen of this type. It has a shaft that is driven off the motor shaft. That in turn runs a ball governor that allows the contacts to close as a load is being put on the motor as it slows. The governor will maintain the RPM within +or- 10. I had to rewind the stator and the motor is a two pole device. Max speed is 3580 RPM unloaded. It will maintain a steady speed of about 100 RPM on the low end. I have included pictures of the variable speed device. I have not painted it. It looks about the way I purchased it. I thought the technology for the vintage was very amazing.
