I didn't want to see this poor little jointer make a trip to a Chinese smelter, so I took it home and refurbished it. I had no idea who made the thing, but with the kind help of other OWWM'ers and the photo index I discovered that this was a "Union" jointer made by Gallmeyer & Livingston, here in Michigan. Most likely the jointer came from the factory with a nice cast iron base, but that's long gone. The little fellow cleaned up well, but there is still some pitting of the metal surfaces, due to the extremely rusty condition I found the jointer in. I was surprised and very pleased to find that this is a very well-performing jointer. It's satisfying to know that I saved a good machine from a certain and ignominious fate! Now to find or make a cutterhead guard.

rear view showing belt drive. Bearing and retainer are massive because these jointers were available with a direct mount motor.
