This was a labor of love, coming together as one machine, after owning (2) of these TH36's. I found both off CL's, 3 and 2 years ago. I lost the tail stock on the freeway with the first one. Went back the next day, found only scattered pieces between dodging traffic...real scary! Thinking about it, that tail stock flopping off the back of the trailer could have killed someone! They are heavy. My son helped me find another tail stock on E-Bay.
The first machine had seen a lot of use. It showed especially on the ways where most of the work was done, close to the head stock. A difference of .005 and more. The lathe was complete, except the gears were in wrong alignment and it didn't come with a complete set of change gears for threading. It was fastened to a heavy homemade steel bench. The gentleman I bought it from, said it "came off a WWII destroyer", the USS something or other, and after the ship was decommissioned they were going to throw it in the drink! His father took it and then passed it down to his son.
The second TH36 was original in every way and complete. It came with the original bench and oil pan under the lathe. The ways were true. It had a lot of tooling, an extra 3 and 4 jaw chucks, knurling tools, 2 morse taper Jacob drill chucks, live centers, dogs, cut off tools, boring tool, complete set of wrenches, and more. Both were filthy with oil, dust, and grease. I eventually swapped parts off of both, to make one really sound lathe, and then put new bearings in the head stock and countershaft. I cleaned them up and repainted both. Managed to find a complete set of change gears on E-Bay. I had an old sewing machine drawer bottom set and fastened that to the underside of the original bench for storage.
