Another Washington CL's find 3 years ago. The guys that ran this outfit were hung over, big time! I had an appointment at 4:00AM. I think I paid $20 for it. I went to pick up a horizontal metal band saw and found this Powermatic Logo on this pathetic sander in the corner of his shop. The sander was a complete mess. Inadequate motor, rusted, nothing would track, and the bearings were shot.
I replaced the motor with 1HP 1725 RPM and wired it for 220V. Installed a different switch, all new bearings to the sander and repainted it.
I as very frustrated with all the hard work that went into this machine and still couldn't get the belt to center track without going too far to the left or the right. Eventually it would come off the idler drums. I turned down the drums on my lathe thinking this would solve the problem, but no.
I talked to a friend that taught shop in high school. He had the answer. The idler drums needed to have a crown in the middle instead of being straight across. It worked....tracks perfectly! All original except for the metal stand.
