A Witherby, Rugg & Richardson mortiser made in 1860. My son located this gem in Spokane Washington and brought it to me in Oregon. I am amazed by the condition and of course the construction of this heavy cast iron machine and the ornate craftsmanship that includes hand painted pin striping. The artist signed it... by "BY BERRY", as this is painted on the right side. It actually works very well. It has 2 vertical oak spring boards on the back side that have a wooden wedge in between to control the spring tension for the pedal. A foot pedal brings down the chisel to square up the hole. The oak table moves up and down with a adjustment bolt. The chisel holder and the (2) material hold down stems have a gib and screws for height adjustments. The fence has a cast iron wheel on the backside for in and out movement. It all works and nothing is missing or damaged. It came with one 1/2" chisel. I fashioned a new fence out of yew wood, since the old one had seen a better day (same dimensions). I also attached a larger walnut table top to the existing oak table. Just a larger surface to work with. It can be removed. It certainly is a beautiful piece of Old Iron.... I do believe the only other one in existence might be in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC
