Another machine from the Shaftsbury,Vt. pine furniture factory. This machine was also found in a good dry area of the building which lends to its very good condition. The name of the manufacture "L.G. McKnight & Co." is cast in to both sets of legs on my sander. The other drum sander that is listed and is owned by Rick Faris is badged L.G.McKnight & Sons Co.Rick's sander has three cast iron spoke supports in the drum as mine only has two of these supports. His sander also has a second flat belt pulley and support bracket that hangs down off of the right babbit bearing housing and mine does not have.Almost of the machines that came out of this factory were at one time run by an overhead line shaft that was still present there. Then at some point the deceased owner converted these machines over to electric motor power. All of the machines were done very professional except this sander which was done with two pieces of 2" thick maple as the motor support. It looks pretty hokey but it did work.I will be changing that as soon as possible!!! The sander paper is wrapped around the drum with both ends over lapping each other and then is pulled tight by a bar that pulls the ends down into a deep grove. The drum is covered with carpet or it can be covered with industrial felt.
