Purchased through an IRS Auction from Riverside Furniture in Ft. Smith, Arkansas in June 2009 for $195. The motor has no tag, but the later model starter had heaters rated for 2.08amps. The original starter was replaced with the grey one in the "before" photo. Fortunately, the original faceplate survived because it was used to bracket the new starter to the base. The original bracket for the original starter was still in place, and Rich O'Connor provided new innards. An angle iron bracket and table were added to which dust hoods were attached. Very useful! The large Vonnegut wheel is approximately 12" diameter.
The base is plate steel. When I dumped the sawdust out, I found the two original brass screws for the faceplate. There is also a second cutout for a starter on the opposite side of the existing opening. It is covered with an inserted plate, so it appears that the base was manufactured to face either direction. Its a very smooth running machine!
This is the first machine I purchased simply because there were none like it in the archives and I thought it was unique. It was still plugged in and bolted to the floor when we arrived at the plant to pick it up.
Many thanks to my brother, David, who not only helped load this thing at the factory, but helped get the nut off the flap wheel end, and assisted in getting things back together correctly.
Thanks to input from the discussion group, and based on the fact that the original starter has only two heater elements, I'm dating the machine in the 1950's. The three leads from the motor are insulated with rubber/plastic, not fabric, so my current thinking is late 1950's.

The cast tag (aluminum, I think) with a backwards "N". It was cast that way, wonder how rare it is?

At some point, Memphis Machinery sold this sander. This was hidden under the number "786" seen above.

Detail shot of one of the end bells. Its a little trickier than usual getting it back together.
