Comments:
This was the second foot motiser I acquired. It was owned by an antique engine afficianado who died, and I bought it from his family in the late 70s or early 80s. Recently I cleaned it up in order to use in a wood show in its home town of Brockville Ontario. I couldn't tell there was any original paint on it until I started scrubbing with varsol and steel wool, then I found so much original paint that it seemed a shame to repaint it. The colours were emerald green and black with red highlights. A few parts had to be spooged and painted, but I kept it to a minimum. I also disassembled everything, cleaned and lubricated, and made a new wooden return spring and table. The show promoters took my picture with the mortiser for their publicity. This machine is obviously made on the pattern introduced by Ezra Gould of Newark NJ, as were those of many other manufacturers.
