Shown is a wonderful early Vermont made wood frame planing machine manufactured by BEMIS & WARE BRATTLEBORO. VT. It appears to be a 20 or 24 inch machine but I didn't have a tape on me. Cutter head and upper feed roles adjust up and down by way of the hand wheel seen below the main frame. The lower feed roles are stationary and not powered. A wrought iron lever at the infeed end starts and stops the feed belt. While these wood frame machines have not survived in great numbers, I suspect that their lower initial cost made them favorites of the thrifty mill owners whose establishments straddled the brooks and rivers of New England and numbered in the thousands.
This machine among others are on display in a water powered grist mill in Weston Vermont. The collection includes a Vermont made wood lathe, a "Fay" foot operated mortising machine made in Keene NH, a Massachusetts patent wood frame band saw, a Lane shingle machine, an up and down saw mill, a mechanical reciprocating cordwood saw, a large collection of tinsmithing tools, early carding machinery, and two turbines made in Claremont NH. At this time all machinery is on static display. Work is underway to restore one of the turbines.
