Shingle saw by LANE MANUFACTURING CO MONTPELIER Vermont on display at gristmill in Weston Vermont. Lane was a prolific manufacturer of low to mid capacity sawmill machinery. Many examples of their sawmills and shingle machines survive today. A "bolt" or section of raw log or squared timber is placed vertically in the toothed jaws in the upper left of the machine. The bolt reciprocates to the blade with its carriage. Before reentering the saw the bottom or top of the bolt is kicked out automatically by circular spurs located in the top and bottom jaws. On the next cut the opposite end is kicked out to give the shingle its characteristic taper. The large wheel to the left joints the shingles square to their bottoms. Basically, it is a large cast iron disk with several planer blades (not dissimilar to those in a hand plane) set into it. The shingle is fed into the jointer through either the right or left openings in the blade guard.
