Comments:
This is a old Baxter Machine Co. 24" square head planer that was in use at a small boat builder/boatyard up until about ten years ago. The machine came from Dion's Yacht Yard in Kittery, Maine . Elmer Dion ( yard founder ) explained to me that his uncle had it in his sawmill and gave it to him in the early 50's as a wedding present for his new start-up boat building shop. The planer was used routinely in the trades and had been re-babbited several times. The machine is belt driven by a large Robbins & Myers three phase 1750 15 HP motor with the aid of a GE starting compensator switch. This planer runs well but needs cutterhead bearings badly. Otherwise it is all there and exceptionally heavy for it's size I would guess near 2000# . I have never seen another like it that was up and running and most likely has been all it's life.
