While this is not really a woodworking machine, it apparently does a nice job of flattening the backs of chisels and plane blades. I have a few other 1940's vintage Delta pedestal and bench grinders and always wanted one of these carbide tool grinders. This grinder shares some similar components, such as the pedestal, so its really part of the same family. Also, there aren't many other examples of this grinder in the photo index.
I bought it from the owner (3rd generation) or what is now a general machine shop in a mill town in central Massachusetts, not too far along Rt 2 from other well known tool and machine manufacturing towns like Athol, Greenfield, and Millers Falls. The owner said they moved into the building in 1967 and the grinder was there at that time. I'm speculating but this grinder probably spent it entire life in that building. I'll have to admit to feeling a little sad about taking it away but it has gone to a good home.
The grinder is in very nice original condition and includes the original light (although I'm not 100% sure about the shade), water pot and #31-804 (CG-4-S) miter gauge. I think that 1941 is the first year of manufacture of this machine.
