This machine and a Rockwell combination belt/disc sander were purchased in the fall of 2008 at an auction for gloatable prices. The machine had a tag documenting it was surplus from the Louisiana Technical College West Jefferson campus. I was concerned prior to bidding as I was unable to engage/disengage the shift lever for switching between wood mode and metal mode. I really got worried once I got the saw home and discovered that the exterior clutch appeared to be welded to the large pulley. Fortunately, the welds were poor and were no longer holding the clutch and pulley assembly together. A band clamp was holding the two together. After removing the band clamp, I still could not move the shift rod. Once the gears were disassembled, I was surprised to find that there was no wear whatsoever to the internal gears. Rust had seized the shift rod. After polishing the shift rod, it worked fine. I replaced all of the bearings, changed the gear oil and replaced the gasket. The saw was repainted Rustoleum Dark Machinery Gray. The wheel covers were originally a lighter shade of gray, but I painted them to match the rest of the saw. I replaced the door knobs, tires, upper bearing guide (one of the set screws was stripped), switch, wiring and the left blade guard and welded a mobile base. I will eventually make a replacement door for the pulley guard housing and a cover for the base.
