This saw was given to me by a woodworker friend who didn't have time or patience to get it working. It was actually in fairly good shape once I got it apart and cleaned up. I now know what they mean by "varnish build-up" for not changing your oil. The crankcase was basically empty, but I think it was because all the volatiles had evaporated and leaving a sludge and "varnish build up" on all the parts. All the moving parts were frozen or nearly frozen from the varnish build up. I had to replace a few screws and nuts that were missing. The original paint is in pretty good shape so I am not planning to repaint. The motor that came with it was to fast (3450 rpm) so I'll use an old 1725 rpm motor from a broken compressor. The protractor assembly is damaged. Looks like the previous users really cranked down on the tightening bolt and bent the gauge (see photo below). I'm using an over sized washer to span the divot, but that makes it difficult to read the angle setting. I went to "Sears Parts" website in hopes of replacing it and looked for 103.0407 parts... I got the "parts unavailable" screen. I guess I'll make it work with the oversized washer. The manual I downloaded (from a web link I got from another posting on the OWWM site, http://www.owwm.com/files/PDF/Craftsman/103-0407.pdf) says that it takes 6" blades. So far I have only been able to find 5" blades locally. It looks like the 5 inchers might just be barely long enough... I'll give 'em a try.
