Oliver #34-DD, 30" Double Disk Sander, Serial #37550, 1930. 1/15/09

Hey,
Here's a little sander we scored in the sale of a pattern shop on Chicago's south side. This will be an upgrade for us from the single sided model that we currently use. Initial assement of the machine was that nothing was broken, but it was a little rough, and it will be a good candidate for a complete restro. I say "was" a little rough because my boys have already completely disaasembled this machine as soon as we got home. I sure appreciate their enthusiasm and they encourage me. It's going to be a good one, and to my surprise we discovered that it has very large Timken Tapered roller bearings on the shaft. I can find no mention of that in the brochures and Rich is checking the original pedigree for us now.
Anyway as we arrived at the pickup site there metal lathe accesories on the parking lot and there was a scrap iron dumpster there with a large metal lathe in the bottom of the dumpster. That was a sad site but then my boys looked in the larger dumpster which was filled with old patterns, that was an even sadder sight. Due to the weather we were on of the last ones in for pickup and the guys told us we could have anything we wanted that was laying around, as shown in the last photo. My son is very proud of the old metal cased stanley router which works fine and made me remember that I used to own one excactly like it long ago. It is heartbreaking for me to see a shop being picked apart and I never enjoy that part of the process. But these Olivers are going to a good home now! We will enjoy owning this machine and the restro pics will follow soon!
