I was lucky to find an 1150A VS drill press head less than a mile from my house.
The Craigslist ad read simply:
Drill press - Powermatic
Date: 2008-07-28, 8:30PM
Used drill with metal floor stand, Baldor 3/4HP motor. Motor runs fine. Head is canted - needs some adjustment and repair to height adjustment screw.
Call not later than 9PM.
I sent off an e-mail at 10pm on a lark and got a response. The next morning was cool and foggy. After an inquiry to the OWWM.org list and some helpful responses http://owwm.org/viewtopic.php?t=42002 I headed over to what turned out to be an organ builder's shop. The head was mounted not very well on a radial arm saw table/stand. Because the column belonging to the stand was not long enough only the lower guide could grab it, preventing the drill from being adjusted perpendicular to the table. For the price I wasn't much concerned about any of this--just eager to load it up and get it home. While I was loading three other folks including at least one member of this group called about it.
It isn't very old, but if it is good enough for Bob Vaughan, Its good enough for me! I've found a matching table, base and column more than 3,200 miles away and hope to secure them one of these days.
