A longstanding friend of mine Clive Hammond, has a very varied collection of woodwork machines, tools and odd attachments in his very crowded workshop in Durban, South Africa. Whenever I see him it has been a standing joke that 3 moulding heads that he had hanging from nails attached to his rafters were going to be willed to me when he goes to the Big Shop in the sky. This last weekend I visited Clive to sort out his email problems and out of the blue, he handed over to me a plastic container inside which were the 3 moulding heads that were our talking point. I was taken by surprise but I think Clive thought if any one would really appreciate them it would be me so I think he knew they would get a good home. I had never seen them close up because they hung up there in the distance. Clive said they belonged to his father and seeing Clive is in his 70s, they must be all of 60 years old.
Seeing them close up for the first time I noted they were made by Delta Speciality Company so they are special. They are in excellent condition and each head was fitted with a set of knives. Clive gave me two additional sets of knives he had so in total I have all five sets. The pictures more or less speak for themselves. The moulding heads are relatively heavy and solid. The knives (cutters) are held by a screw which does not go through the hole in the knife but the head of the screw enters the hole horizontally and this as it tightens secures the knife in the head. Each knife is stamped with a letter and the 5 I have are stamped A,B,C,D,E. Very neatly inscribed at the base of the knife is the word Delta. The bore is 5/8 inch.
