I bought this shaper at a swap meet for $40. I paid the seller for it and told him I would be back later to pick it up. When I came back later in the day, the seller had thoughtfully painted "SOLD" across the side in bright yellow paint (to match his price tag).
This shaper is identical to one I saw in a late 1930's Duro catalog on this site, so I'm guessing that Duro made it for Montgomery Wards. The top is 14" x 18" and it has a 1/2" spindle. According to the catalog, it also came with an interchangeable 5/16" spindle, but that's long gone. It has a Powr-Kraft 1/3 hp motor and a nice Furnas reversing switch. I haven't done much to this machine, other than scrap off a light layer of rust from the top, clean it, and replace the bearings. It originally had a couple of ball crank handles - one on the front for raising the bit and one on the fence. These were made out of pot metal and had pretty much disintegrated when I got it. I've got a couple of replacement cranks on order. It has an original green-wrinkle paint finish on it which will probably be next to impossible to match, so I won't be repainting it anytime soon.
Incidentally, I had just finished restoring an even smaller Atlas/Power King shaper when I came across this one. I actually like the design of this one better because the table remains stationary and the spindle moves up and down (unlike the Power King). I've used this shaper on one project so far and it's a nice little machine, although it could use a bigger motor.
