This is by far the best find I've found so far - I got up early Saturday morning to prepare for my woodworking club meeting (we meet at 8:00 so this was shortly after 6:00 AM) so I took a look at the local CL and saw this posting:
drll press - $15 (chamblee)
heavy duty standing DELTA drill press, old but works! Saturday garage sale, 9-2 only.
So I thought "old but works!" - hey that could be something. But what to do as I had to be at my meeting at 8:00 and the sale started at 9:00. I'm not one of those that knocks on the door at 6:00 AM for a sale - in fact I refuse to do that as it's really obnoxious. But I was up early and it was only a couple of miles from the house so I figured out where it was and thought I'd do a drive-by. Luckily, a very nice lady was pulling stuff out of the garage and putting it on the lawn so I said "Morning! Are you open yet for business?" and she said "Come on down!"
I told her I saw the CL ad and was interested in the DP - she told me it belonged to here husband's grandfather who recently passed away. After offering my condolences she showed me the press - when I saw it I immediately said I'd take it if she wouldn't mind holding it until later in the day after my meeting - she also showed me some other items and I ended up spending about $50 (got two drawing tables $2 each, an 8" Craftsman dado set, some hold-downs from I think a shaper table, a bunch of bits and 4 jacobs chucks, a large light table, an older heavy "work-mate" and some other bits and pieces - most was a quarter to fifty cents each. Anyway, back to the press.
This is a fairly early Delta Model 970 Triple Duty Drill Press (with DP220 head) and a round base - I looked on the MS and I believe the earliest date for them (photo wise) was around 1937 with this configuration and motor. No serial number tag nor evidence of one. Original "Double Duty Split Phase" motor. It's very heavy and has the extension rod for the toggle switch and this brass desk light attached to it, as well as wood extensions for the table. It works but you have to spin it up by hand.
