I picked up this sturdy cast iron 18” scrollsaw for $20 on a recent arnquest to Seattle. It’s a very nice unit, but I think ultimately it’ll prove a bit large for my needs.
The seller had bought it at a yard sale ten years previously with the intention of using it to make an ultralight plane. That never happened so I picked it up.
It was utterly filthy and disgusting when I got it. Some kind of extremely tenacious grease had settled over the entire thing. The oil reservoir had hardly any oil but lots of dust in it, and the underside was a mess of cobwebs and stuff. My son and I spend several days using harsher and harsher cleaners on it until it was ‘as good as it’s gonna get’. Luckily the crinkle finish was well adhered!
We cleaned up the tabletop too, which actually wasn’t rusty at all. Probably due to the grease it had received. Drained and cleaned the reservoir, and replaced the gasket. Also replaced the rubber washer that acts as the pump. We gave up on the motor, it was too much and I have a bunch of spares that’ll work fine.
Still need to find a piece of hose the right OD to fit in the hole for it, and to fix the hold down doodad.
