Here’s something that’s a bit of an odd duck as far as I can tell. It’s a General grinder.
But which General, I am not sure. It’s clearly not the famous Canadian General from Quebec. I put this picture in the “General Manufacturing, Milwaukee WI” archive. But that company was formed prior to 1909, and this machine does not say “General Manufacturing” it just says “General” and it says Est. 1930. But it does say Milwaukee on it. So I am not 100% sure if this machine is in the right place.
Anyways, my dad gave it to me a few years ago, along with the drill press to which it is attached. Dad can’t remember exactly where he got it, but thinks it might be the same place here in Vancouver he got the Buffalo Forge 15 drill press in the 60’s. I like the deco-inspired look. Dad had a plate made for it back in the day that he then mounted on the post of the drill press. It works great. The motor is a Leland Electric motor that was no doubt from a gas pump as dad worked many years at Chevron.
I guess dad felt it was important to know at all times how fast the wheels were rotating . . .
I took one of the wheels off recently to mount on the hand grinder next to it and have not put it back yet.
Edit 03/05/09. I notice that there are some very similar grinders shown under the Powr-Kraft name. They have the same "BALL BEARINGS" decal on them too. Hmmmm.
