I saw this jointer advertised on Craigslist in Kitchener Ontario. No matter that this is 3000 miles from where I live and I had to pay for shipping it across the country! The seller had ordered a new combo machine for his furniture shop and wanted to wait for it to arrive before shipping this on to me.
Anyways his new machine finally arrived in due course and he sent the Poitras on to me. It was in great shape, and he did not cash my cheque until he was ready to ship it. Very gentlemanly. When it arrived, it still had chips in it from when it was last used. Barely a spec of rust on it, and the blades were still sharp! He had bought it used and had no history on it.
I replaced the existing 5 HP 3 phase motor (made in Brazil) and crappy English made IEC starter with a 3 HP single phase Doerr motor and a nice old A-B starter. My dad scrounged up the 3 HP motor for me from where he used to work. It required a ton of cleaning, and I put new bearings in it while I was at it. Replaced the three belts as well and it was ready to go.
Cuts like a dream. Connected it up to a 6” dust collection system with a cyclone and nary a chip escapes. Couldn’t be happier with it.
Not exactly sure of what the model number is, as the tag on the machine has a serial number on it but not a model number. It is similar, but not identical, to the 4800. The serial number suggests that it was made in May 1985.
