Here's my next project. It is all dissassembled and the parts are ungoing electrolytic rust removal. This machine has a large brass placard from the original dealer, Kemp Machinery Co. of Baltimore, MD, and also a small brass property number tag from the naval base at Pensacola, FL. It's been repainted at least three times, the latest beige, once a bright turquoise blue, and under that a green that looks close to the Northfield color. It appears that the original color was a grey similar to Rockwell's color. They even painted the working faces of the table incline blocks! The serial number was found stamped on the end of the infeed table. I bought it from a storage place in Houston. The machine is all present and restorable. Rust is limited to light surface damage. One small casting piece, part no. 338, is broken; other than that there are no breaks, welds, or parts missing. The motor is a huge old GE 5 hp beast I will likely replace with a modern, smaller frame size motor. This GE motor appears to have been a replacement itself as there were a pair of 1/2 steel spacer plates between it and the cast iron shelf it sat on. The motor mount casting is the triangular shaped piece sitting on the infeed table in the photo. The casting allowed for direct coupling of the motor to the cutterhead via a flexible coupler. This casting is exactly as pictured in Crescent's 1930 catalog yielding the best available evidence as to general date of manufacture for the machine.
