I purchased this sander along with a Companion 1/3hp motor, 10"x34" flared leg stand and 11" scroll saw, from a Craigslist ad.
The previous owner told me the set-up originally belonged to his Grandfather. Pick-up was Livonia Michigan, 01/10/2008.
Childs & Co, Ft Wayne IND, 8" disc sander model no. 600
One piece cast iron body, P/N 601.
Cast iron table, P/N 602, with 1/2" x 1/8" miter gauge groove.
8" steel disc, 1/2" shaft on two long bronze sleeve bearings, each with an oiler.
Congress brand machine pulley# 3-2 (3" and 2" diameters). (Wow, two speeds!)
Motor pulley# 2 (2" diameter) with "Childs & Co" cast into the side.
Miter gauge is a modified Craftsman/Companion made by King-Seeley (P/N 12312-103). The left corner of the protractor is cut off to clear the disc at 90. The miter gauge is possibly from a small sander. A stop rod assembly was included.
Overall, this sander is in excellent condition: original gray paint, no radial play in the bearings, some oily dirt/dust and minor corrosion on the steel lock knob (which I suspect might not be original).
This appears to be a simple, attractive, rugged sander.
There is no tilt indicator.
I'm not sure what the two holes at the top and side of the disc hood are for--possibly some attachment?
