Received a comment recently from a visitor here expressing amazement at some of the junk people are so proud of. I intend no offense to that person for there is truth in his expression. I am guilty of such behavior. Here is another contribution to more such junk.
Picked this up recently from c-list posting asking for offers. I was first to make one and seller took it, wanting the saw gone. Only made a not-really-serious offer. D*mn. Didn't need it, no room, etc., etc. So now I have it. Originally just wanted to find a welded stand for a '37 BS project. This is what I ended up with:
Under the regretable cosmetics a solid, complete (except guard/splitter) 1947 tilt-top. All intact, nothing broken.* Push-button manual starter. 1-hp R/I motor. Delta welded stand. Original belt guard.
A thorough cleaning, new bearings, a new piece of ply for the extension and a bit of Scotchbrite/WD40/elbow grease to be rid of the surface rust and what appears to be a piece of junk will be a real Cinderella story. Well, okay, not exactly. But a fine saw, better than much that is offered new today. Not bad for $40 worth of junk.
Saw was for sale by son-in-law of original owner. Was given to seller and he had no interest. Wanted it gone to free up space in garage.
Note the *. That is for this qualifier. When cleaning the top, I discovered a depression in the front/right corner of the CI top. Someone had been using that corner as an anvil and had managed to beat a depression into it. -Sigh- Doesn't effect usability at all, but dumb enough to launch me into a rant. I'll get over it. Still a nice saw.
Will post again when closer to the silk-purse stage, saw being bit of a pig's ear at the moment
