Comments:
This is a Crescent No. 424 Planer and Matcher. The machine was capiable of planing one face and milling two right angle edges on a board. The macthing heads are no longer attached to the machine but one can be seen sitting on the infeed table of the planer in the photos. The large countershaft seen in the pictures would have been sitting on the floor behind the planer and would power the planer cutterhead as well as the two matcher heads.
The owner of this machine sent me some documentation of where his Dad got a quote on this machine in April of 1934. From this, we can estimate that it was manufactured around 1934. By the way, the list price for this machine in 1934 was $740.00, F.O.B., Leetonia, OH. They offered a 10% discount on the list price plus an addational 5% for cash with the order.
