This table saw came to me recently when I mentioned to a fellow OWWMer that I had a thing for Duro tools. He pulled it out of a rathole, in diassembled, robin's egg blue, motorless condition. The saw was in perfect operating condition. I applied a coat of light gray alkyd resin that is a shade or so lighter than the original paint, went through the mechanicals and lubed everything, cleaned up an appropriate-era 1 HP, cap start Howell motor, and installed it with a new cast iron pulley and goodyear belts. I also installed a carling toggle switch, which is sufficient because the motor has integral overload protection. As far as I can see from the literature on Duro on this site, this is how these saws were originally equipped. Initial trial cuts in 2x material were a breeze.
I have always loved this class of saw, such as the Darra-james light duty cabinet saw and the junior unisaw. It's the perfect thing for my cramped basement shop. The cabinet footprint is just 18" square, and the top is 25" deep by 32" wide with extensions. It replaces a 9" craftsman saw which did the job but this is a major improvement. The fence is sort of wonky and needs further attention, but it's the original so I hope to keep it if possible. No miter gauge, so I am on the lookout for one of those. I will replace the plywood table insert with a new homade one out of 1/2" UHMW I have lying around, and someday make a mobile base.
It is gratifying to have a machine come together with as little hassle as this. If only they were all this easy!
