Late 2005 or early 2006, I first heard about this drill press from my Brother who had worked at a company that assembled and repaired Hard Wood Floor Sanders. He told me they had this drill press sitting in the back of the building next to a pile of motors, the drill press had not been touched in years....
On September 7th 2007, I told the Wife that I wanted a Drill Press for my Birthday, I had seen one Craig's list 35 miles away in Boston MA, and I had inquired about it but was told that I was 2nd in line, #1 was going to look at it tonight. As a Back up, I went to the company that my brother had worked for, which was 1.1 miles from my house. I inquired about the drill press that I had known about for a few years, and when I went to go and look at it, it was sitting in the same ole spot, doing the same ole thing it was doing when I first heard about it (which was collecting dust and grime). I asked if it would be for sale, and I was told to call back in a few days.... Well Tuesday afternoon rolled around and I called them, and they said they would sell it to me.... So on Friday afternoon, I stopped in, and handed them over the $, and loaded it into my truck. At this point I did not know if the motor ran, but I knew it was a good deal, and motor's are easy to come by! I got it home that afternoon, and plugged it in, and sure as sh!t, it came to life! Yippee! So I started to look it over... where I found that the front cover was cracked, and it was missing 2 of the 4 handles... Otherwise it just needs a GOOD cleaning!
Something I have found out with help from the people over on the "Shop" is that this is a Bench Model Drill Press, that some one put a Floor Model Column on. Who knows where the Original Column went...
I have cleaned it up, purchased a new belt, and re-wired it. I might re-paint it at some point, but right now, it looks good enuff to join the workforce of my Shop Tools. I did not take apart the Arbor/Quill assembly. It seems nice and smooth, so Why mess with it!
In the process of cleaning it, I took the original paint off of the Stamped Aluminum Craftsman Badge. If you look at the link below, in the "Before" photos you can see some parts of it look Green in color, this is actually grease and dirt build up. I used a product called "Greassed Lightning" to cut the grease, it worked great! This is what actually took the paint of the Craftsman Badge, and It also revealed the "SKS Bearing Sticker".
The Motor is a MASTER Motor. The info on the Tag is as follows:

From a little searching, The Master Electric Company was purchased in the 1950's by Reliance Electric, and is now part of Baldor Electric Company.
