I stopped off at the shop of a local Automobile Restorer. He offered me this 4" jointer. I called Jamie Norwood to see if he needed another brick for his Wall of Jointers. Indeed he did, particularly a brick with it's original guard.
Please excuse the photos, I just had time to brush off the shop dust and snap these.
Features of interest include a three knife round cutterhead, bronze bearings, the ways are flat, but stepped for alignment. As you can see, the guard is mounted to the end of the outfeed table like the small Crescents. The base casting is designed to be mounted directly to a motor in the 4-M version. I am not sure whether this is a 4-M which lost it's motor, or a model 4. The partly cleaned "Workace" tag does show motor information on it.
Wallace shows this machine, or a very similar model, in all of there catalogs from 1915 through the 30s. They note that it was Mr. Wallace's first product, and they make the claim that it was the first truly portable woodworking machine.
