a woodworker from concord Massachusetts went to work for Harvard university and closed his shop. he sold all his machinery (except this one) due to its excellent condition and irreplaceability, and stored it for 15 years. when he lost his free storage in Watertown ma. he set about finding a good home for it. he stopped into Larkin lumber (1988 i think) in Hudson and asked if they wanted a 48" triple drum sander and they said "no thanks, we already have one" (not a Yates, and sadly lost in a fire years later) He came into my shop and I bought it sight unseen. I hired Ray Dulac (from NH or Maine) to get it up and running. He had actually refelted (gray pool table felt) and rewired (piano wire) all three drums years earlier. Prior to that, as a young lad, he had worked for Irving & Casson, A.H. Davenport Co. in Boston MA. His specialty was fixing and maintaining old machinery. I have the original machine record and manual dated 8/26/24. it was completed on 5/21/24. tested on 9/17/24 by Blair & Larson. it was shipped to the original purchaser (Irving & Casson, A.H. Davenport Co.) on 9/24/24. customer order # 20005. shipping # 57128. it was set up with 60/80/100 grit with the first 2 drums spinning at 1725 rpm and the last at 3450. There are two bed feed rates. leather belts and an Osha nightmare but can remove almost 1/16" in a single pass. I have a new SCMI 2 head wide belt but this thing still kicks @@$ for heavy stock removal. My fantasy is to restore it to 100% condition. Sorry I don't have more complete info ;) I also know where a 24" version lives 30 min drive from me. I will post more info about the pics (and its operation) in the owwm.org discussion forum
