Baldwin, Tuthill & Bolton #82 or Oliver #451 Hand Band Saw Set Machine
This little machine made its dirty paper debut in Oliver Catalog A, 1904, page 146, 3/4 page about the trio of setters #83A being the motor driven version @ 50 lbs, #82 being the small hand cranker @ 15 lbs. and #83 being the larger of the same@ 20 lbs. The model #82 had capacity of 1/8" to 1" and the model #83 capacity is 1/8" to 3" width of blade. In the 1910 Oliver catalog these were assigned new model numbers, now called model #450, #451 & #452.
This machine had a long production life of about half a century or more, according to the old catalogs, but they dont seem to pop up often. I just got this one and it is the only one I have ever seen in the wild, but I have been interested in old band saw equipment for a long time because I actually sharpen my own blades except for carbide tipped resaw blades. Finding this fine example has spurred my interest in getting all that stuff together and working again. I do plan to try to use this machine on my smallish blades. There are a few broken thumb screws and a missing spring but still complete and in fine overall condition. This is a very cool little mechanical contraption.
Also found this machine listed in these fine old catalogs;
Oliver Catalog B, 1906, page 218, 3/4 page.
Oliver Catalog 16, 1910, page 103, full page. Now called model #450, #451 & #452.
BT & B, 1910, Saw and Knife fitting manual, page 105, picture shows about 13 of these in a stockroom on shelves.
Oliver Catalog 18, 1915, page 66, page.
Oliver Catalog 19, 1916, page 68, full page.
Oliver Catalog 20, 1917, page 60, full page.
Oliver Catalog 21, 1918, page 60, full page.
Oliver Catalog 22, 1923, page 66, page.
Oliver Brochures 1936, 1941, 1943 and 1949.
Hanchett Grinders Brochure 1948, listed as #82, 83 &83A.
