This machine is located at the Georgia Agrirama Living History Museum in Tifton, GA (http://www.agrirama.org).

The lathe is before the merger between J. A. Fay and the Egan Company which formed the J. A. Fay and Egan Co. in 1893. It has two patent dates from 1867 on the machine which have not yet been identified. The machine is in working condition and is powered from a flat belt from an overhead line shaft.

This lathe is intresting in that when the lathe was originally purchased from the Fay Co., you would only purchase the head stock, tail stock and tool rest. The lathe bed would be made up on site using a wooden frame. The advantages of this was: First, it would save money in shipping cost in a day and time when it was quite expensive to move freight across the country. And second, the user could build a lathe bed how ever long he needed for the particular application at hand. If you needed a lathe to turn poster bed post or columns for the porch of a house, an 8' or 10' bed was no problem to build on site.

The two patents on this lathe are:

Patent No. 66,885 (Jul. 16, 1867) - http://www.datamp.org/displayPatent.php?number=66885

Patent No. 67,676 (Aug. 13, 1867) - http://www.datamp.org/displayPatent.php?number=67676
