Pictured is a wrought iron hammer dog which was used on an early water powered saw mill built by The Lane Manufacturing Co. While seen in advertising of the period, Ive never seen one in person. Apparently they were either not favored by sawyers or became misplaced over time. The hook loops through a circular loop which was cast in the rear of uprights or knees. The hammer dog could be swung into the log and imbedded deeply with a mallet blow thereby adding one extra grab into an unwieldy log yet to be sawn and holding it fast to the carriage. A nice example of the blacksmith's art!
