Here is a very rare oliver 8" jointer. I purchased this from a fellow in CT.,He said he bought it from a High School that was closing down its woodworking dept. Well I got it home tuned it up and started to build furniture with it and it server me well for about 7 years. I was looking for a larger jointer and found a 16" northfield so this fine little 8" was looking for a new steward and my good friend Tom was glad to give it a new home.
You know, the funny thing about the base was that every time I accidently hit it with a board it sounded very strange not like cast iron but a completely different pitched sound. I did not have the time to repaint the jointer so i just left the many coats of paint alone, which brings us to the real story. When Tom got it home he immeadiaetly stripped it and much to his amazement the Base {with the funny sound} you remember?, was not cast iron but cast brass!!! if you can belive it. Well he called me up and told me and of course i wanted to buy it back but he was so happy with it i just let it go. I tried to get him to clear coat the base, and not paint , but he wanted to paint,so I have included a couple of pics of the Brass Base Jointer for your pleasure. Does any one else have one of these? It was built in 43' so there must have been a scarce supply of iron during WWII, hence the brass. Pretty cool don't you think?
