This is a VERY HEAVY and smooth running rough planer. It has variable feed rates, segmented feed with powered bed rollers and a fine thickness setting dial. The heavy guage sheet metal flat top cover is handy for stacking boards that need another pass etc.
The ID plate reads: "BALLANTINE INDUSTRIES, established 1932, capacity 24 x 6, type SS1-4, Absecon N.J., Patent Pending."
I bought this machine locally and cheap because it was missing the 4 knives and gibs. I called a friend to share my good fortune (brag) and he told me that he sold that planer before our paths crossed and that he held back those missing parts until he got the final payment, which he never recieved! Now that my friend knew the seller had the funds from the sale he went on a no excuses collection mission.
Needless to say the planer was unused (with essential parts held back) and in the same great mechanical condition as when sold. I installed a fresh set of Guhdo 18% HSS knives, greased her up and she started earning her keep.
P.S., my freind replaced it with a Martin 24" finish planer (no bed rollers) which is very nice (as all Martins are) but won't feed rough lumber. Even the best have problems, I know of a brand new Martin Shaper that was delivered with an off spec (bad) 1 1/4" spindle!
7 1/2 HP triple belt drive to the cutterhead with 16,008 CPM (Allis Chalmers "Line Start Induction Motor")
3 HP Feed motor (GE)
Original color: White (even though my business is called Shannon Woodworks I can't claim
responsibility for the Irish orange, green and white "paint job".
