This band saw was purchased in February of 2007 for $125 from a fellow who had two other band saws in his shop: a 14 inch Delta and a massive industrial machine. The Atlas weighs 105 pounds. The homemade stand and British motor weigh another 70. The motor is a Crompton & Parkinson 220 volt, 1/2 horse, rated at 1425 rpms. It was being run ungrounded with an 18 gauge lamp cord from the switch and has since been grounded and served with a heavier feed. The drive belt was running off the 4 inch motor pulley resulting in a very fast blade speed. It's now running off the 2.5 inch pulley. I fashioned a new steel blade guard, based on Atlas drawings, to replace the unsightly wooden one. The original Fafnir bearings were pretty scratchy after 44 years of use. I soaked them in Liquid Wrench, pulled, tapped, coaxed, swore, and ultimately pounded them out. They were replaced with NTN sealed bearings set in with my drill press. The tires look original and show cracks but they are supple and have good shape. The table and body are cast iron. I initially thought the smaller cast parts were aluminum but I have evidence they are actually cast zinc. I primed these parts with Zinsser Bin spray and finished everything in Rustoleum no. 7587 Dark Machine Gray spray enamel. The saw is whisper quiet with the new bearings and slower blade speed. In fact my wife commented that such a quiet machine might lull the operator into complacency. Good point. I'll try to keep that one in mind while using it.
