A few years ago, I restored a big State disc sander that I purchased at an auction. My woodworking buddy decided he needed it for fine tuning the wedge pieces for his segmented turnings. He "borrowed" it and left me "sanderless". The State was a monster machine anyway, so I've been wanting to get a 12" Delta since then.
A few weeks ago, I made my bi-annual pilgramage to William Redmond in Atlanta specifically to pick up a sander. I was not disappointed. On a Saturday morning, I selected one for "checking out" but it was without a plug. THe sales guy, Bob, promised that a call back on Monday a.m. would provide an evaluation. When I called back on Monday, Bob informed me that the sander motor worked fine but the table and disk were pretty much trash. The good news was that they had a new table and disc to replace the bad one. I stopped by a few minutes later and paid for the "package" and headed back to Florida.
The sander was a faded "machinery green" (over traditional Delta grey). I thought I'd paint it grey to match the new table and disc assembly, but the more I worked on it the more I liked the green. So, afer a thorough cleaning and some sanding, I primed the motor, base and stand and painted 'em green. I left the new parts in their factory grey and black. I plan to add a reversing switch - hopefully a drum type - shortly.
I picked up some 12" discs at Grainger today and snapped these photos.
