I've been looking for a pattern makers lathe for a while. Just had not found one either close enough, priced reasonably, etc. for the last couple of years. Couple of weeks ago Bruce Norton said another OWWMer, Bill Crocker, knew were there was an Oliver Model 2356 for sale. Through Bruce and Bill I finally made contact with a cabinet maker in Franklin, NC who did indeed have a 2356 for sale. Did an inspection last weekend. Owner had the lathe for a year but had never run the lathe. Previous owner had gotten at a auction but had never run the lathe, but lathe looked to be in good condition.

This weekend Bruce and I picked the beast up. This is by far the heaviest piece of woodworking equipment that we have moved. A previous owner had put the lathe on 4"X4" frame with plastic casters one of which had already broken. Once we got the lathe off the original frame and mounted onto some heavy timbers the move straight forward. We did a quick connection to the RPC to test electricals. This is one smooth running lathe. Speeds are 570, 1160, 1770, and 3520 rpm. Headstock and tail stock are both No. 4 morse taper. Headstock is 1 7/8", 8 tpi.

The first picture is a with sitting on the ways taking a break before we unload. For reference Bruce is 6'2" tall. Next couple of shots are of the garage door variety.

Got the Birth Cert. for the lathe.

Lathe was ordered Mar. 11,1966, and shipped Sept. 12, 1966.

Lathe was ordered by The H-B Machinery Co. of Hartford, Conn. and shipped to:
Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Rec. Sta. 3, PEO-MPS 963 of East Hartford, Conn.

Shipping wt. was 2910 lb and price was list $5251. With 10% discount the final price was $4725.00.
