For those like myself who appreciate form, if even at the expense of function, this one takes the cake. Made in Virginia but advertised as far East as Maine as this image from a 1856 business directory attests. There is obviously a little artistic license at play in the rendering of the banner and arrows but overall I find that machine advertising engravings are fairly true to form. Ive seen the shield motif used in this section of the frame by other shaper manufactures of the time. Im sure the paint job was mind blowing! Id like to believe that there may be one or two of these still in existence and waiting to be discovered. The Stover and Bicknell name were the selling agents in Boston. Note the patent date of March 11 1856 and cast gear teeth integral with the lower stretcher and used in conjunction with a worm gear to crank the spindle over for special applications.
