This machine came from the millwork shop of the Rowe family of West Hurley, NY. They had been using it to make flooring until they closed the carpentry shop in the 1960's. The patent dates are 1871 and 1879, and both are for the special type of bearing housing called the Ellis Journal Box. It is adjustable so that the bearing can be tightened for wear until the babbitt is totally worn out. The 1897 Rowley & Hermance catalog states that 1475 of these machines had been produced. They were bought by American Wood Working shortly afterward. This is an early 3 side model. It also had a molding head on the outfeed end which I will eventually add again. Rowley & Hermance also produced a 4 side version of this machine. The length of my machine is 8 1/2 feet, and it weighs between 2500 and 3000 lbs.
