This is one of two machines I just purchased over a weeks time from a gentleman that is moving to a retirement village. This one is a Craftsman 1/2 inch spindle Shaper. The manual is dated 06/1977 and it was originally purchased for $535.00 including bits and collars etc. The other machine was the 6X48 inch belt and 9 inch disc sander which was originally $350.00. I suspect that was this machines original price before cutters and other accessories were added. It was in a heated basement and it too was covered in cobwebs and dust. He added a switch to reverse the motor which he stated that he never used. Once I got the shaper home I turned it on and it worked like at his house. I flipped the switch to reverse it and I got a humming or buzzing sound. I reversed it again and same buzz. I removed the plug from the front on/off switch and plugged it straight into the outlet and still a buzz. I may be asking for advice on this but I have not looked further into this one yet. The motor is a simple 1/2 HP Sears so replacing it will be simple if necessary. The bits on the wooden holders came with this and the box of bits from another shaper I had just purchased two months ago. The one from 2 months ago had a small table so I purchased this shaper and sold the other on the big auction house in the sky. Besides these two tools in a week I also purchased a 10 year old Delta hollow chisel mortiser with a shop fox stand ($95.00 total). Needless to say I am rearraging my workshop to fit everything.
